I have not played a course officially.. Just found frisbee golf last sunday. since then bought disc, Skillshot basket and hopefully be playing a full round this weekend.
me and my 4 year old son played the first hole at the course in stuebnville. Boy do I stink.. very bad curve to the left. ended in the creek twice.
I have a Innova Skill Shot Portable Basket and 5 Aviar Putt & approach Discs. After finishing cutting my grass I was putt up my portable basket in the front yard and thought heavily of developing a putting routine. Or better yet figure out how to make a game of it.
I made a marker from 10 feet from the basket and every 5 feet. So I had a marker at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 feet. I took my 5 discs and started throwing in at 10 feet. When I got at least 3 disks in the basket I went to the marker. If I fail I went down a marker.
Remember I am a beginner and the farthest i got back was 35 feet. I basically stayed around the 15-20 marker. My son came out about 20 minutes later and wanted to play disc golf.. so I let him pick where in the yard to put the basket and where we was going to tee off from.. and we took turns throwing the disc untill we got close enough to the basket and announce he wanted two turns. He just wanted to make sure he got to score the basket.
I was thinking about my putting routine and thinking i am going to vary my Required Baskets shots. That way I can practice some baskets shots if i put the required baskets from 3 to 1. But then practice with 3 or possiblitity 5 required to make it to develop a good solid short game.
Also i thought about on the longer shots to make some kind of scoring on shots i dont make that i give how close to the baskets i get and also if i hit the basket.
So give some share some thoughts how to make this better or better yet post your results so I and other newbies to this sport and see how good the good players are. ;)
I was thinking about not posting this, becuase it is kind of embarassing but figure other newbies will learn from this. So here goes.
When I bought my starter kit, I actually put one starter kit down becuase it was opened. and really didnt want to chance something being missing or worst yet it being used and then returned to the store.
When I got home, I open my new Disc Golfing Starter kit and on the back of the disks I noticed someone written numbers on the inside. I automatically thought that someone bought this set used it and returned it. I exmained the disk and they look in good shape, so i didnt think much of it except what did the numbers mean.
One reasoning I thought maybe someone thru them and mark the yards that they threw it.
I didnt think much of it till i bought a couple of more disc. And notice the they had handwritten numbers on it. WEIRD!!!! though maybe it was some kind of inspection code the manufacturer did.
tintownsnake sent me a private message about his choices for disks and to makes sure it weighed less than 160 grams. I heard of people talking of the weight of the disc but i was clueless how you find out. So I reply and asked tintownsnake how do you know the weight. He made a quick reply and told me they are handwritten in ink inside the disk.
WOW!!! do i feel stupid.. And I thought I bought used disks becuase of those handwritten numbers.. lol
Before arriving at Thompson Park I stopped at Dunhams to buy some disk. I was unhappy with my purchase of the starter set I bought. I had the Aviar, Valkyrie, Starfire Pro, Shark and mini. Also it had a case with it. But I bought it right after I found this course and excited about my new found interest but really didnt research it. I went to a course with my 4 year old son and played the #1 hole Par 3 at the course in steubenville. I had a very sharp uncontrollable turn to the left. I think research on the net why my disc was going left. proably most was my throwing techique. I wasnt throwing straight across my shoulders. also I read on the net that disc a newbie shoudl use and in my kit I only had one and that was the aviar putter.
So armed with a list of disc and i favored the ones with the most glide. didnt really find the ones i really wanted however I had second and third picks also.. So I bought the Skeeter for my midrange and the Champion sidewinder for my distance driver.
I was only going to play the champion Sidewinder, skeeter and aviar only. That was my strategy and I was going to stick with it with no matter what.
but to be honest i didnt even use my Champion Sidewinder, there was always trees in the way and always had to play short off the tee except for hole 18. I could have used the sidewinder but never threw it before. the hole breaks to the right and i always have a problem with banking left. so I played it safe and threw the skeeter off the tee.
I did after playing went to an open shot and tried th sidewinder. it did go a lon way but had a slight turn to the left.
All and all I would say you only need a Mid Range and tputter for this course. at least on the beginner side of things.
Just last sunday, I discovery the Disc Golf Course in East Liverpool at thompson Park. I went to Ponderosa In Calcutta for fathers day. After eating my 4 year old son, Phillip wanted to go geocaching (www.geocaching.com). I looked at my GPS and we went to Thompson Park. Arriving at the Park we quietly seen our first Disc Basket and explained to Phillip what it was. I knew abut disc golf but never realized that some courses pop up near us. We went and found the cache and on our return to the car, we seen a group a players on the course. We decided to watch them played a hole. We laugh and talk up a storm as the flying disc was hitting trees and my son cheered as they put the frisbee in the basket. One golfer must have noticed us and walk half the course back and threw Phillip a small disk. and then the guy walk back to his group.
We didnt play the course from the tee but we had fun throw this small disk into the basket and didnt to play a hole. we took turns throwing the disk and became partners in conquering this hole. We had a ball and on the way back home, we stopped at Dunhams and I bought a starter set. Came with 5 disks and bag.
the next day, After picking phillip up at day care, we went to beautty Park in Steubenville. The course here is way too hard for a father and a 4 year old to give this game a try. But the 1st hole was a simple par 3 and easy enough for me and the 4 year old Phillip to navigate. So we played the 1st hole over and over again.
Well I learned something.. My Disc Golf game and my real golf game is the same. My frisbee would leave straight but then make a hard turn to the left (my real golf game it goes right). I went n the creek twice and over the creek once.
But even though I totally stink, We both had a lot of fun.
Later in the week, bought the Skill Shot Portable basket so me and my son can practice at home.
I am hoping this sunday I will be able to return to Thompson Park and play at least the front 9. Most likely my son will be with me and we will be taking turns and acting like a team to get it in the basket. I figure this way will be the best so he dont get as tired and frustrated trying to beat DAD.
in a way hoping to go by myself so i can see how good i can do. But will enjoy it more if my son enjoys it and get to share the experience with him.
Well that is about it. will post how we do.
